Single Use Plastics
STOP THE CYCLE THAT POLLUTES OUR OCEANS
We can do better.
The Case Against Single Use Plastics
Feeling the pressure from consumers about adopting environmentally friendly practices, businesses are moving to eliminate single use plastics. They’re everywhere in our consumer-driven society and we’re starting to awaken to the very real dangers they present.
Single-use plastics break up over time and become microplastics. In this form, they pollute all parts of the environment, especially our waters, and cause great harm to wildlife and marine life that ingest them.
This threatens the animals directly while also contaminating our seafood and affecting our own health.
Over the last few years, we’ve seen increasing pressure from environmental groups and consumers to eliminate single use plastics. There are bans on straws and plastic bags in cities around the country and we’ve seen a move to start replacing the 6-pack plastic rings that can entrap wildlife to devastating effects.
The good news is that those movements are working. They effectively reduce the amount of plastic in the environment, they build awareness among consumers about the effects of these disposable products forcing us to really think about their necessity, and they put pressure on companies to come up with new ideas and new sustainable sources.
But we still have a long way to go.
What can we do?
